How to Level and Reseed Your Lawn
Gardening Tips, Soil | June 20, 2025
Uneven lawns can be frustrating, low spots collect water, high spots make mowing difficult, and the overall look isn’t as polished as it could be. Klassen’s Turf Blend Soil, delivered conveniently in a one-yard Big Bag, is the perfect foundation for your lawn and ideal for filling in dips and leveling out your yard when preparing to re-seed and overseed.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get the job done right.
Step 1: Assess Your Lawn
- Walk across your yard and note any uneven areas.
- Look for spots where water pools, grass struggles to grow, or the ground feels bumpy underfoot. These are the areas where Turf Blend will make the biggest impact.
Step 2: Prepare the Area
- Mow the grass short to make it easier to spread soil evenly.
- Rake away debris such as sticks, thatch, or rocks.
- For bare or thin spots, lightly loosen the soil surface with a rake or garden fork to create good seed-to-soil contact.
Step 3: Spread Turf Blend Soil
- Use a wheelbarrow or bucket to move soil from your Klassen Big Bag to the low spots.
- Spread Turf Blend evenly with a shovel, rake, or landscape leveling tool.
- On areas with existing lawn, apply no more than ½–1 inch per pass to avoid smothering existing grass. Build up deeper areas gradually over multiple applications.
- Use the back of a rake or a leveling board to smooth and flatten the soil for a seamless finish.
Step 4: Add Lawn Seed
- Choose a grass seed suited to your region and lawn needs (sun, shade, drought-tolerant, etc.). We carry a few different seed varieties to create a thriving and healthy space.
- Evenly broadcast seed by hand or spreader over the leveled areas.
- Ensure the seed makes good contact with the soil, but the seeds do not need to be buried
- If needed, lightly tamp the area with your feet or a roller to settle the soil.
Step 5: Water Thoroughly
- Water the leveled areas well. This helps the soil settle into place and encourages the existing grass to grow through the Turf Blend.
- For newly seeded areas, keep the area completely damp until seedlings are about 2cm (1″) tall. This may call for light watering more than once a day in dry, sunny weather.
- Continue watering regularly for the next couple of weeks, keeping the soil moist but not soggy.
Why Choose Klassen’s Turf Blend Soil?
- Perfect balance of sand and compost for strong root growth.
- Screened and consistent, so it spreads easily without clumps.
- Delivered in one-yard Big Bags, clean, contained, and placed exactly where you need it.
